Celebration of safe internet day highlights continued commitment to digital safety

Today marks the Safe Internet Day, an important event recognized globally, emphasizing the significance of internet safety and promoting a safer digital environment for both children and adults. Organized by Internet Society Georgia in collaboration with Georgia’s Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, and supported by various local and international organizations, the event unites leading experts in digital safety, media literacy, and internet governance.

The program commenced at 11:30 with opening remarks by Ketevan Rekhviashvili from Internet Society Georgia and Eka Kubusidze, Head of the Communications, Information, and Modern Technologies Department at the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia. The sessions covered key topics such as cyber safety strategies, the development of media literacy in educational curricula, and the impact of digital technologies on children and adults alike.

In parallel to the events in Tbilisi, the UNICEF Georgia and the Georgian Network of the UN’s Global Compact held a focused discussion on enhancing children’s rights in the digital world, aiming to create a more secure online environment adapted for children’s needs. Prominent figures, including Rati Skhirtladze, co-founder of Enagram.ai, and Konstantin Stalinsky, an expert in internet media and a board member of ISOC Georgia, discussed initiatives to safeguard children online and the role companies play in enhancing the digital landscape.

Additionally, on February 12th, an educational webinar titled “Safe Internet in the Era of Artificial Intelligence” took place, dedicated to educators and representatives from the educational sector. The webinar, led by Konstantin Stalinsky, addressed how artificial intelligence can be utilized ethically in education, ensuring the protection of students in online spaces and upholding ethical standards.

This series of events underscores Georgia’s proactive approach to fostering a safer internet environment and highlights the collaborative efforts needed to address the challenges and opportunities presented by the digital world. As we celebrate Safe Internet Day, we are reminded of the ongoing need to protect digital environments and promote a culture of online safety, ensuring that internet access remains secure and beneficial for all segments of society.
